Places

By Mamita Umita
This month I have decided to compile a list of some of my favorite places I've visited over the years, whether its just the name of the town or city, or a nice hotel I've laid my head down in to rest.

1. In Milan, Italy I got to stay at the lovely Hotel Ariston. Granted its not a 4 Seasons or Peninsula, but looking out of my window every morning and evening at the busy street below, watching the cable car go by I wouldn't have traded my room for anything. There was a great little Cafe next door with plenty of gelato to spoon out on a given day. Just a 5 minute walk from the beautiful Duomo, this eco designed green friendly hotel is a place to relax after a long day of taking in the sights and sounds of Milan.

2. There is nothing more peaceful than sitting at the top of a mountain after a trek - the silence is almost overwhelming. No place more beautiful to experience silence then at the top of the Red Rocks in Sedona, Arizona.

3. I have been to New York countless times. It is still my favorite place on Earth, and whether visiting Manhattan or Long Island I always find time to stop at my favorite Italian Bakery Veniero's on 11th Street. Just outside of Little Italy, you can indulge in the best canolli's or Napolean eats around while sipping an Espresso. The shop has been there forever, and definitely gives off that "Cosa Nostra" vibe.

4. My husband would argue of course that Puerto Rico is the best place to be, period. I still have yet to explore Puerto Rico with him, but when I did travel there I was able to find my way to the Camuy Cavern. It's a bit of a ride from San Juan, but so worth it especially on a sweltering hot day. The dark caves are cool from the beating sun and filled with the most amazing stalactites - or for non scientific folk like me, cave icicles. Just watch out for the friendly bats!

5. Some of the nicest people I have ever met live outside Guadalajara in a little town called Ajijic. Nestled around the mountains and the largest lake in Mexico, staying there is authentic. It's become a bit of a retirement community, so its very laid back - but with the old church in the town square, little bed and breakfasts, and cobble stone streets the time you spend there offers the experience of a lifetime.

Beginning

Since I have not posted anything forever - sorry - I have decided to turn over a new leaf with this blog. First and foremost, I have bought the rights to my name (mamitaumita). Second, since I am often too busy now with my outside of computer life, I will probably not type as much - but highlight things I love whether they be for families, mommy's, girlfriends, husbands, children etc etc.

Since we are in the Holiday Season again, I thought I would start by showing some of the funniest most interesting gifts I have seen so far:

1. knockknock.biz has many humorous gifts for the cheeky boss that you might have like mine. My favorite had to be the various sticky notes:

2. I quite often get tired of the kids only asking for video games and mindless things to entertain them. One of my favorite gifts as a kid was a microscope kit that my parents got me. The Discovery store has a lot of cool and fun scientific gifts for the chemist or biologist in your family here are some of my favorites:

Spark Crazy Lab - Whip up instant snow, make waterproof sand, form an exploding blob and grow a test tube pet.

Genetics DNA kit

3. For the person that has a lot of cash laying around in a lousy economy or those who just dream big - the Kindle is the coolest thing out there. It stores up to 200,000 books and you can read your daily newspaper with a click. They are sold out as of right now - but it would make any one's New Year.

Whatever you decide to buy or give this Holiday Season - no matter the price, its not important. As long as you give lots of love.
